Achilles Tendonitis

What is it?

Inflammation around Achilles Tendon

What Causes it?

Overstressed or overuse, or injury to Achilles Tendon

Signs and Symptoms:

Swelling, tightness, pain directly to the Achilles tendon or heel, pain with movement of ankle to the back of the heel

Ankle Sprain

What is it?

Twisting/rolling foot or ankle

What causes it?

Abnormal placement of foot while walking/running/jumping

Wearing unstable shoes

Signs and Symptoms:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Pain with pressure to area
  • Unable to walk

Arch Pain

What is it?

Arch pain

What causes it?

  • Flattening of the arch, flat feet
  • Wearing improper shoes
  • Abnormal movements of joints
  • Weakened tendon

Signs and Symptoms:

  • Pain directly to arch
  • Pain after walking for long periods of time

Athlete's Foot

What is it?

Fungal infection of the skin

What causes it?

Wearing shoes for long periods of time

Moist dark environment created by shoes

Signs and Symptoms:

Dry, flaky skin

Itching

Blistering

Redness

May be present with thick nails

Bunions

What is it?

A painful bony bump

What causes it?

Hereditary

Signs and Symptoms:

Pain to area of bump

Redness and swelling

Difficulty wearing shoes

Fungal Nails

What is it?

Abnormal yellow discoloration and/or thickening of the nail

What causes it?

Improper foot hygiene leading to fungal growth or trauma to the nail

Signs and Symptoms:

Thickening of the nail, abnormal color of the nail, possible pain, may cause ingrown toenail

Hammertoe

What is it?

A hammer toe is a fixed or flexible contracture, or bending of the toe joints. This bending causes the toe to appear like an upside-down V when looked at from the side.

Signs and symptoms:

Pain to toes

Corns or calluses that can lead to open sores

Redness and swelling

Difficulty wearing shoes/irritation from shoes

Heel Pain

What is it?

Pain located to the bottom, back or sides of the heel

What causes it?

Multiple factors associated with heel pain: plantar fasciitis, growth plate inflammation in pediatric patients, Achilles tendonitis, trauma

Signs and Symptoms:

Swelling, pain with walking, unable to bear weight to the heel

Heel Spur

What is it?

Extra bone growth located to the bottom of heel or back of heel

What causes it?

Can be related to plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendonitis/contracture

Signs and Symptoms:

Pain in the back or bottom of the heel, swelling, pain with movement and/or pressure to that area

Ingrown Toenails

What is it?

Overgrowth of nail or skin

What causes it?

Improper trimming of nails

Infection at nail border

Underlying toe deformity leading to abnormal pressure

Signs and Symptoms:

Redness and swelling

Possible fluid or pus excretion

Pain to the nail border

Metatarsalgia

What is it?

Pain located to the ball of the foot

What causes it?

Improper shoe gear, neuroma, fractures, underlying foot structure

Signs and Symptoms:

Pain to the ball of the foot with walking or standing for long periods, swelling, callus formation

Neuroma

What is it?

Inflammation or enlargement/pinching of nerve located between the toes

What causes it?

Improper shoes, underlying foot structure

Signs and Symptoms:

Pain between the toes, tingling sensation to the toes, "walking on pebbles" sensation

Plantar Fasciitis

What is it?

Heel pain related to inflammation of band of tissue

What causes it?

Tight tissue band, improper shoe gear, lack of arch support

Signs and symptoms:

Pain directly to the bottom of heel

Pain with first step after resting

May also have arch pain

Skin Cancers of the feet

Skin cancer can develop anywhere on the body, including in the lower extremities. Most skin cancers of the feet are painless, and often there is a history of recurrent cracking, bleeding, or ulceration.

Sprains, strains and fractures

The feet and ankles work together to provide support and mobility to the body. A foot or ankle sprain is a soft tissue injury. A fracture is actually a break in the bone.

Sweaty Feet (Hyperhidrosis)

What is it?

Excessively sweaty feet

What causes it?

Wearing shoes or socks for long periods of time, possibly associated with athlete's foot

Signs and Symptoms:

Foul odor to feet, sweat, constantly having to change socks

Tailor Bunion

What is it?

A painful boney bump

Signs and Symptoms:

Pain to area of bump

Redness and swelling

Difficulty wearing shoes

Warts

What is it?

Abnormal skin condition

What causes it?

A virus

Commonly present on bottom of foot

Can spread from contact

Signs and symptoms

Pain with pressure

May bleed
